CARL SCHURZ PARK. May 18, 2021
UPPER EAST SIDE. The very green Upper East Side park along the East River that houses Gracie Mansion and sits above the FDR Drive. There are ball courts, two dog runs, one decent sized green space, many little green spaces, the East River Path, nice views, a ferry dock and a fully refurbished playground.
Coffee: Black Star Bakery & Cafe on York between 84th & 85th has great coffee, a cute little court yard and a rather delicious food menu. Eat Pretty on 83rd and York serves coffee from a tiny hole in the wall that also manages to pump out an amazing variety food.
Food: There isn’t a single restaurant on the park. While you’ll find some options on York Ave there are many more places to choose from on 2nd Ave.

American Playground. October 13, 2019
GREENPOINT. Although not very convenient by subway, Greenpoint is easily accessible by ferry. The neighborhood is a delight to explore and not surprisingly it is filled with great coffee shops and cool laid back eateries. American Playground is right in the heart of this still gentrifying corner of Brooklyn, one block from Greenpoint Avenue and one block from the grassy riverside oasis of Transmitter Park. A cool old water tower stands over the playground which is pretty standard except for a play bulldozer that is clearly the main attraction. Our toddler spent 45 minutes here and didn’t play with anything else.
Coffee: So many. Both Odd Fox (@odd_fox_coffee) and Champion (@championcoffee) are excellent and have cute outdoor spaces in the back.
Food: If you want anything baked, Ovenly (@ovenly) can not be beat. Along Franklin St. you’ll find lots of cool options.

GOVERNORS ISLAND. May 18, 2021
MANHATTAN. The 172 acre island in NY Harbor was used as a military base for over 200 years before finally being opened to the public in 2005. Today Governor’s Island has been transformed into a great big green space with lots of walking trails, ball fields, parks, hammock gardens, a couple playgrounds and even some sheep that cut the grass. There are bikes and other peddle vehicles to rent if you can’t bring your own wheels. The island is also home to the maritime-focused Harbor School.
Coffee: There is a Joe Coffee on the island but it is only open on the weekends. There is also a Joe Coffee in the Governors Island ferry terminal on Manhattan. Ground Central Coffee Company and 787 Coffee are just a couple minutes walk from the ferry terminal on Coenties Slip and Pearl Street, respectively.
Food: For the classiest experience sip cocktails and slurp oysters at Island Oyster while you enjoy a magnificent view of southern Manhattan. Two kid friendly options on the island include Taco Vista (also comes with a view) and the wood fired pizzas Pizza Yard. On the weekends you’ll find plenty of options at the Liggett Terrace Food Court in the center of the island.

Tecumseh Playground. January 31, 2021
UPPER WEST SIDE. Saddle up partner! I cannot remember the last time our 3yr old had so much fun at a playground that did not have trucks. He does, however, love bison. The playground is named after civil war general, William Tecumseh Sherman, who spent his retirement nearby on 70th and Broadway. The western theme is in full effect; with ridable bison, a covered wagon, huge western mural, a cactus fountain and train tracks on the ground.
Coffee: Danny Meyer’s sleek and fancy cafe, Daily Provisions, is just around the corner from the playground entrance. In addition to coffee they have breakfast sandwiches, pastries and some lunch fare.

Moynihan Train Hall. January 17, 2021
MIDTOWN EAST. Not so much a traditional playground but what kid (or parent) isn’t captivated by the big spaces and bright lights of a brand new train station. Opened on January 1, 2021 the expansion of Penn Station across 8th Ave is noticeably void of commuters and passengers…for now. This impressive space is absolutely worth checking out especially if you are in the area, like shopping at B&H Photo or eating at the nearby Hudson Yards.
Coffee: The calming farmhouse interior of Old Country Coffee, 34th and 10th, feels out of place so close to an entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel.

Harry Chapin Playground. January 18, 2021
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS. Little Harry Chapin Playground, along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, must have the most discarded toys of any playground in all of New York. Best part is the vast majority of them still work! There are all kinds of ridable cars and trucks as well as play kitchens and more. The playground really is quite small so outside of all the toys there are some toddler swings and two little jungle gyms. The views of downtown and the Statue of Liberty from the promenade are fantastic, making this a great place to stop if you are spending the morning exploring Brooklyn Heights.
Coffee: There is a Joe Coffee on Hicks and Pineapple, just a couple blocks away. Check out one of their seasonal lattes if that’s your thing!

Anne Loftus Playground. January 10, 2020
INWOOD. Anne Loftus playground is located at the northeastern corner of Fort Tryon Park. The park and the original playground were designed in the 1930s by Fredrick Law Olmsted Jr. after John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated to the city 25 rocky acres of property with spectacular views of the Hudson River and New Jersey. Strategically placed at street level, the playground is a steep walk down from the Cloisters (@metcloisters), and features a former wading pool turned fountain, a number of jungle gyms, a little theater play area and an old field house. The playground was named after Ms. Loftus who was a resident and community leader in Inwood during the 1980s. For the full history of the park including its role in the Revolutionary War check out www.nycgovparks.org.
Coffee: Pint sized Kuro Kirin Espresso and Coffee (@kurokirinnyc) serves up Counter Culture beans by friendly baristas just up the street from the playground, on Broadway between Cumming and Academy Streets.

Ancient Playground. January 9, 2021
UPPER EAST SIDE. The Ancient Playground is inspired by the Met’s Egyptian collection and sits directly across the from the Temple of Dendur. The playground kind of looks like an archeological dig site and there are plenty of cool spaces to explore. An obvious option if you are planning a trip to the Met it is also a good place to play on a cold winter morning because there is plenty of direct sunlight.
Coffee: Family run Butterfield Market on the the corner of Madison and 85th street is a convenient place to stop for coffee or a quick meal. The sleek new market opened in 2020 and features a little coffee section right inside the entrance as well as prepared options like NYC classics bagel and lox and pastrami on rye. They are also well known for their frozen yogurt. If you are just interested in coffee or fro-yo there is an express to go window on 85th street.

Union Square Playground November 21, 2020
UNION SQUARE. Evelyn’s Playground is hidden behind the pavilion at the north end of Union Square. It is a perfect place to stop before or after browsing the greenmarket, which is open and even more enjoyable with fewer people. The sleek looking playground has a cool futurist metal dome, three big industrial strength metal slides, wobbly balance poles and more. There is also a small fenced in area for smaller children.
Coffee: There are larger chain options directly around the park but you would be rewarded to venture a few blocks away. A brick and flora filled outpost of Columbian coffee purveyor Devocion is on 20th between Broadway and 5th.
Good place to grab a pour over to go or, when they fully open again, enjoy it on the big leather couch inside.
Food: There are too many options to name but our favorite bar in NYC is Old Town on 18th between Broadway and 5th. If you like buffalo wings or classy old bars it is a must stop!

Bleecker Street Playground – December 13, 2020
GREENWICH VILLAGE. A charming little playground at the intersection of Hudson and Bleecker. There are lots of old toys including things for the sandbox, little play kitchens and a nice selection of riding toys. Some of them even work! Maybe it is the location but this playground has a very New York vibe.
Coffee Options: Several good options including The Elk on Charles St, which features a small selection of seasonal drinks. There are a couple benches out front and an outdoor dining hut.
Food Options: Since there are no tourists getting a meal at one of Bleecker Street’s more popular restaurants is easier than even. We recently ate a John’s of Bleecker, the famous pizza place place with an equally famous wait.

Seward Park – December 26, 2020
CHINATOWN. Located where the Lower East side tumbles into Chinatown, the intersection of Essex St, Canal and East Broadway. It’s a great stop between exploring two great neighborhoods. I am not sure there is a playground in NYC that encompasses so much of its park as Seward does. Two large jungle gyms flank a concrete oval patio in the middle of the park. In the winter it is a good place to scooter or play tag. In the summer water fountains squirt up from the ground. There are tow enclosed areas at the south end of the park; one with swings and the other with a jungle gym for smaller kids.
Coffee Options: The park is flanked by an outpost of Cafe Grumpy, the delightful Little Canal and the more exotic Kopitiam around the corner on Broadway. Kopitiam serves up some uniquely Malaysian drinks like the delicious KopiTarik (Penang black coffee with condensed milk). Both Kopitiam and Little Canal were recently featured in #DriftMagazine.

Pearl Street Playground – December 12, 2020
SEAPORT DISTRICT Update. Pearl Street Playground is across Water Street from the main pedestrian 🚶🏻 drag on Fulton Street. Highlights were a 🆒 rope balance beam and windmill 🌬 on top of the jungle gym 🐒. Imagination Playground, closer to the water 🌊,, is the Imagination Playground 🏰. The playground is meant to inspire interactive play through sand🏖, water 💧 and music 🎶 which can make it attractive in the warmer months ☀️.
Coffee ☕️ : The businesses around Front Street seem to have been hit 😔 pretty hard during the Covid 🦠lockdown. The well known and always popular 🇫🇷 Paris Cafe is a notable closure 😭. Luckily its equally famous if not quite as elegant 🎩 neighbor, Jeremy’s (@jeremysalehouse), remains open. Cafe Patoro’s (@cafepatoro) is still serving coffee ☕️ alongside their Brazilian 🇧🇷cheese bread 🍞.
Food 🍴: Across the street from Imagination Playground 🏰, Luchadores NYC (@luchadores.nyc) serves up some delicious 🇲🇽 Mexican food on a little outdoor patio

Industry City – December 20, 2020
INDUSTRY CITY. Not so much a playground but they have a great outdoor ice rink.  It usually is not too crowded and the prices are reasonable compared to others in the city. They also have skate aids for first timers. In a world of outdoor only activities this is a great choice.
Coffee Options: There are several cafes at Industry City as well as options in the food court.
Food Options: Absolutely no shortage of restaurants here. If you want it, someone here makes it. The Japanese village is our favorite as our three year old has a thing for Katsu Curry. There is a heated tent in the courtyard if the weather is bad.

Clement Clarke Moore Park – November 15, 2020
CHELSEA. Really cute playground with a good neighborhood vibe. There are swings, a couple jungle gyms and lots of space to run around. There used to be a great collection of well working toys left by neighborhood families but as of November they had been cleared out. The park is named after a 19th century poet whose grandfather purchased a farmstead here in 1750. The retired British Army Officer named his property “Chelsea” after London’s Royal Chelsea Hospital. (@nycparks)
Coffee: The Intelligentsia Coffee Highline Coffeebar (@intelligentsiacoffee) is in The Highline Hotel (@thehighlinehotelnyc) one block south on 10th Ave. Look for the large red double decker bus. Take your coffee to go or enjoy it outside in the hotel’s elegant courtyard

Little Engine Playground. March 14, 2020
LINCOLN SQUARE. A small playground on Riverside Blvd. in a sleepy neighborhood at the far west end of Manhattan. Highlight is a super cool three car train. There is also a kind of pirate ship looking mini jungle gym, some swings and another small jungle gym. Lincoln Center is just a few minute walk to the east. On warmer days there is a lot of activity along the Hudson River.

Quarantine – Spring 2020
CULPEPER, VA. As covid hit NYC in early spring 2020 we were fortunate enough to have been offered refuge at the grandparents small family farm in Culpeper, a little town about 90 minutes south of Washington DC. The old town center on Davis Street is a mix of new boutiques, upscale restaurants and a couple town culinary favorites that have been there forever (think donuts and diners). There is also an Amtrak station right in town, not surprisingly it is popular with DC’ers looking for a weekend out of the city. There are no playgrounds in the old downtown but there are two coffee shops and occasionally a freight train passes right thorough town.
Coffee: The Ravens Nest on Davis St is your quintessential small town coffee shop. It is warm, inviting and cozy. The best seats are in the front, which look right out on Davis St. Put your feet up, grab the local paper and watch all the town’s doings’ right outside. Around the corner is 18 Grams, half sleek bike shop and half coffee shop. The name comes from the amount of coffee grinds needed for an espresso. It is a different vibe but the preferred option for the coffee aficionado.

Union Forge Park – Summer 2020
HIGH BRIDGE, NJ. The Columbia Trail is a 15 mile path in Hunterdon County that weaves its way along an old rail bed through scenic woods, historic towns and a steep gorge. The Northern trail head begins outside of Flanders and passes through Long Valley and Califon before ending in High Bridge. There are numerous places to park if you do not want to do the whole 15 miles. The ride between Califon and High Bridge is the best and most scenic. High Bridge’s Union Forge park is just a minute off Main Street. There are ball fields and a little playground with toy construction trucks and a sandpit.
Coffee: Scout’s Coffee Bar + Mercantile on Main Street is a great place to stop for your caffeine fix or quick snack in High Bridge. In Long Valley Valley you will ride right past The Coffee Potter, a popular stop for bikers on the trail given its location.
Food: Five miles before High Bridge you will bike through the town of Califon and past Rambo’s Country Store. A true general store throwback and worthy instagram post this is the place to pick up your picnic lunch.

Imagination Playground, Prospect Park. March 8, 2020
PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS. A fun little playground in the southeast corner of Prospect Park on Ocean Avenue. It’s a perfect jumping off point to explore this section of Prospect Park which includes the ice rink, Prospect Park Lake and Smorgasburg. The Prospect Lefferts Garden are is also fun to explore with streets full of charming row houses.
Coffee: Loud Baby. A cute and oh so Brooklyn coffee shop on Flatbush Ave just north of Parkside Ave, just a couple minutes walk to the park. I didn’t hear any actual babies.
Food Options: We had some good shawarma and hummus at Kulushkat on Washington and Lincoln.

Chelsea Waterside Park. March 7, 2020
CHELSA. Really cute playground with a colorful wooden barracuda(?) swimming under what has to be the tallest slide in New York City. The playground is nearly hidden behind trees and a little hill even though it is sandwiched between 11th and 12th ave., just north of Chelsea Piers at 23rd st. Although small in space there is a lot of sensory stimulation; little hills, big stone steps, small rubber walls, a bovine fountain and the narrowing ends of that barracuda.
Coffee Options: Underline Coffee on 20th st. and 10th ave., directly under the Highline. A narrow space with an industrial feel, check out the cool metal sign over the door, it feels perfectly at home this far west in Manhattan.

Stuyvesant Town – Playground 12. March 1, 2020
STUYVESANT TOWN. The massive 80 acre residential complex stretching from First Ave to Avenue C has 110 buildings, 11,250 apartments and over twenty thousand residents. It feels like a college campus, with lots of green spaces and walking paths connecting all the brick buildings. The main square is flanked by two playgrounds and two large ball courts. The larger Playground 12 is pretty awesome and has a large fire truck we couldn’t pry our little guy off. The playground is accessible only to residents via a card entry system, but when we went the gate was open. In the winter the other playground, directly across the square, is an ice rink.
Coffee options: The ground level of the buildings around the main square have a study area, yoga studio, play area and a cafe called Five Stuy Cafe.

ABC Playground. February 29, 2020
LOWER EAST SIDE. Happy Leap Day! The little ABC Playground between Essex St., Norfolk St. and Houston makes for a quick stop if you are exploring the Lower East Side or looking for larger than life frog on Leap Day. There is also an elephant and two jungle gyms, including one that perfect for younger kids.
Coffee and food options abound. Most recently we got our caffeine fix just one block over at Ludlow Coffee Supply. MasalaWala, across the street from ABC Playground, serves up some delicious Indian cuisine.

Heckscher Playground February 22, 2020
CENTRAL PARK. At 1.8 acres this is Central Park’s biggest and most enjoyable playground. It is close to Columbus Circle and has a certain elegance befitting its premium Central Park real estate. Walk through the columned breezeway and you will find a little main square, a mulch covered area with swings and slides, a jungle gym surrounded by sand, a squishy floored hill and bowl that are perfect for running up and over, and the star attraction; an huge maze like brick fort. The giant rocks around the perimeter of the playground are basically a natural jungle gym. An hour here is sure to wear out even the most energetic toddler. The shops in the Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle or the food hall in the Plaza make for good lunch options. The nearby Central Park Zoo and ice skating rink can add even more fun to your Central Park adventure.
Coffee Options: The Columbus Circle area has no shortage of Starbucks and pricy pastry shops. Although the (@lepainquotidienusa) Le Pain Quotidien on 58th and 7th might actually be the closest coffeeshop to the playground.

Main Street Playground. February 16, 2020
DUMBO. The waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges has been revitalized into one of the most charming strips of riverside property in NYC. A newly renovated brick warehouse containing the new Time Out Market is flanked by Jane’s Carousel and this nautical themed playground. If there where a prize for best looking pirate ship jungle gym this place would win by a mile. Check out the famous views on Washington Street, grab a coffee, then play here before lunch.
Coffee Options: FEED Coffee, which is committed to fighting world hunger, is just inside the Time Out Market building between the playground and the Carousel.
Food Options: The new Time Out Market has nearly every type of food you could want, cooked up by numerous well known restaurants from around the city. Seating, as with all NYC food halls, can be tight.

Koneko Cat Cafe. February 15, 2020
LOWER EAST SIDE. (@konekonyc) High end cat cafe befitting of the hip Lower East Side. The cats move between three levels, although one is outside (the “catio”) and closed during the winter. All of them are quite friendly and like being pet and sitting in your lap. If you do not have a pet at home (or even if you do) a cat cafe is great way for kids to get comfortable with animals.
Coffee Options: The cafe is split between the cat area and an actual cafe. You can take your drink inside the cat area to enjoy in the presence of your new feline friends. Since it’s a Japanese cat cafe, the snacks — sweet and savory — are Japanese.
Food Options: The Lower East Side has no shortage of great places to find food. On our most recent visit we discovered the quaint little Gaia Italian Cafe (@gaiaitaliancafe) on Houston St. We had a homemade pesto lasagna and really delicious fig and prosciutto panini.

Washington Square Park. February 9, 2020
WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK. (@washingtonsquarepark_) One of New York City’s most iconic parks. Its famous arch is dedicated to George Washington whom the park is named after and through the years this park has been a cemetery, a parade ground and even a place for public executions. Today you’re more likely to encounter tourists, NYU students, artists, chess masters, dogs and families. There are two separate play areas for kids, and a third if you count the fountain. At the northeast corner of the park there is a more traditional fenced in playground with swings and a jungle gym surrounded by sand. In the southwest corner of the park there is a neat little area of artificial grass with climbing ropes and little hills to run up and roll down.
Coffee Options: Both Irving Farm (@irvingfarm) and Third Rail Coffee (@thirdrailcoffee) are one block south on 3rd Street.
Food options: MacDougal Street is full of quick serve options of nearly every ethnic cuisine. Although seating is a little sparse Oatmeals (@oatmealsny) on 3rd Street is a great kid friendly option for a warm breakfast.

Travers Park. January 20, 2020
JACKSON HEIGHTS. Maybe you are exploring Jackson Heights or maybe you are shopping for a car on Northern Boulevard. Either way, Travers Park makes for a nice quick stop. The park feels brand new (some of it is still under construction). There are several spacious play areas and some very unique climbing equipment.
Coffee: Espresso 77 (espresso77newyork) is a a great neighborhood cafe/bar with live music and lots of local art. It is conveniently located on 77th St. and 37th Ave., midway between the Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Heights subway station and the playground.
Food: If you are exploring Jackson Heights you have to stop for Indian Food. The main commercial area is just a few blocks south of the playground around the Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Heights subway station. Washington Market Park (@washingtonmarketpark). January 19, 2020
TRIBECA. The park is named after a large wholesale produce market that was in this area in the late 19th century. Although just a few blocks north of the World Trade Center and ritzy new Brookfield Place the area around Washington Market oozes Tribeca vibes. Inside the park there is a decent size green space, a gazebo, a cool little tunnel, a wooden train and two areas with jungle gyms. One looks like a viking ship and the other has New York City style water towers.
Coffee: Laughing Man Coffee (@laughingmancafe) is the hole-in-the-wall hip coffee shop of your Tribeca dreams. It’s just around the corner on Duane St. The inside is tiny but there are several places to sit outside.
Food: Lots of cute places nearby and the food court at Brookfield is a few minutes walk south.

First Park. June 29, 2019, Jan 5, 2020
HOUSTON and FIRST AVE. You will find this gritty little playground just outside the 2nd Avenue F train stop. If our toddler could vote for his favorite playground in NYC this would be top three. The playground is full of old peddle and push car toys. Most are missing wheels or hardly move but our toddler loves playing with them. Bordered by First Ave, Houston St and 1st Street the area is busting with activity. Once you peel your child away from cars there are an endless number of great food options and neighborhoods to explore.
Coffee options: Mudpark is in the playground and Lazy Llama (@thelazyllamacoffeebar) is directly across the street.
Food: If you like lines and iconic New York food both Russ & Daughters (@russanddaughters) and Katz’s Deli (@katzdeli) are nearby. Otherwise walk south into the LES or north towards Tompkins Square.

Vesuvio Playground. January 4, 2020
SOHO. Mid block between Thompson and Sullivan, just north of Spring St. I guarantee this is the biggest ramp based jungle gym you have ever seen. It is practically one full city block long. There are also some swings and a little wading pool that is open in the summer. This is a good place for a shopping break. You can even make your spouse wait in line for a cronut at Dominique Ansel Bakery (@dominiqueansel), which is right next door.
Coffee: Ground Support Coffee (@groundsupport) is around the corner on West Broadway. The front of the store has a big glass window and benches where you can watch the hip and fabulous (and childless go by).
Food: If your little ones like pasta then check out Piccolo Cucina (@piccolacucinany) for some delicious Sicilian cuisine. There are three locations right by the playground including ones on Spring and Thompson.

La Guardia Playground. January 1, 2020.
WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN. If you ever find yourself with time to kill at the base of the Williamsburg Bridge (maybe you’re waiting for a Peter Luger lunch reservation) rest assured there are two decent playground options. Almost directly across the bridge is La Guardia Playground. It is small and surrounded by bridge onramps but check out the large statue of George Washington in the little square next door. He is watching over those same onramps. On the Peter Luger side of the bridge, just south on the corner of Bedford and 9th, is the larger Bedford Playground.
Coffee: Sleek little Northerly Coffee (@northerlycoffee) is just around the corner on Havemeyer.
Food: Peter Luger is a two minute walk from the playground, just on the other side of the bridge.

Gulfport Beach. December 28, 2019
GULFPORT, ST. PETERSBURG. There is a shirt for sale in one of the nearby souvenir shops that says “If you’re too weird for Gulfport, you’re too weird”. Perhaps it is fitting the beachside playground here is outfitted to look like a pirate ship. Your kids will love running back and forth between the soft sand beach and little enclosed playground while they practice their best “arrr!!!”
Coffee Options: Gulfperk Coffee Bar (@gulfperkcoffeebar) on Beach Blvd might have the largest small size you will ever find in a coffee shop. But the drinks are tasty and there is a cute patio if you would like to enjoy your latte curbside.
Food Options: O’Maddy’s Bar and Grille (@omaddys_gulfport) is a St. Petersburg institution and a short walk down the other end of the beach. The open air layout provides great views of Boca Ciega Bay. The menu is extensive, the pub food is great, there is often live entertainment and the wait, if there is one, is never too long. Fortunato’s in Gulfport is a good option if you’re looking for pizza and outdoor seating.

Seminole Park. December 27, 2019
HISTORIC KENWOOD, ST. PETERSBURG. A little green square in the delightful Historic Kenwood district (@historickenwood). The park is surrounded by charming Art Deco-ish bungalow homes that are prevalent all over this city. There is a gazebo in the middle of the park, Spanish moss hanging in the trees, two jungle gyms, some swings and library boxes for both kids and adults. The cobbled streets just add to the area’s charm. Ten minutes here and you might just find yourself browsing Zillow.
Coffee Options: Bandit Coffee (@banditcoffeeco) on Central Ave and 27th St South is modern, bright, airy and always busy. They make some of the most amazing seasonal lattes too. Sit outside or pull up a stool in the front and watch this revitalized area of St. Pete go by. It is about a 10 minute walk from the park or a 2 minute drive. A little further down Central Ave, towards the downtown on 22nd St South, is Black Crow Coffee (@blackcrowcoffeeco). Enter through the courtyard via an ally into a tropical looking cafe with a very chill vibe. Order at the counter and wonder through the eclectically decorated rooms to find a little nook of your own.
Food Options: Central Ave has so many great restaurants and not a chain in sight. The closer you get to downtown the more numerous options you’ll find.

Imagination Playground
SEAPORT DISTRICT. South Street seaport was all but wiped out during Hurricane Sandy and has been slowly building back ever since. Fulton Street was given a full makeover, Pier 17 (@pier17ny) was torn down and rebuilt and Front Street is a super charming cobbled strip of old New York. Little Imagination Playground is in the back of the Seaport Museum, along Front and John. The playground is meant to inspire interactive play through sand, water and music. They used to have giant foam blocks but we haven’t seen them in a while.
Coffee: The exposed brick and worn wooden furniture in Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee (@jacksstirbrew) on Front Street create the perfect atmosphere in this historic district of the city.
Food: Numerous great options all over, particularly between Fulton and Peck Slip. Our favorite option is the Paris Cafe (@pariscafenyc) on the corner of South Street and Peck Slip. This is one of the oldest pubs in NYC, operating since 1873! The burger and fish and chips are excellent. Around the corner on South Street is our pick for NYC’s best dive restaurant, Fish Market (@fishmarketnyc). A true neighborhood throwback that serves up Malaysian and Chinese food, an early weekday lobster special, standard bar food and the best crispy fried rice you will have anywhere on planet earth.

Clement Clarke Moore Park – December 14, 2019
CHELSEA. Really cute playground with a good neighborhood vibe. There are swings, a couple jungle gyms and lots of space to run around. There is also a treasure trove of community toys. Not just peddle cars but large dump trucks and other vehicles our little guy absolutely loved. While lots of playgrounds have community toys I have never seen so many that actually still work!
Take your coffee to go or enjoy it outside in the hotel’s elegant courtyard.
Food: Chelsea Market (@chelseamarketny) is just a few blocks south. Although often very crowded there is a great selection of food throughout the market including a couple sit down options and lots of enticing fast casual options. Warning – tables and seats can be scarce.

Athens Square – Sunday December 8, 2019
ASTORIA. Athens Square was built as a gathering place for the neighborhood’s large Greek community. In addition to playground equipment there is a little park square with three doric columns and statues of both Socrates and Athena. The park is just one block away from 31st Street, which is the main boulevard of Astoria. The N and W trains run above 31st Street and there is a stop at the park (30th Ave). This is a great jumping off point to explore one of NYC’s best old school neighborhoods.
Coffee: Catty corner to the park on 30th st. and 30th ave. is the bright and inviting Astoria Coffee (@astoriacoffeeny). What started as a delivery service is now a brick and mortar coffee shops with a focus on highlighting different roasters.
Food: Neptune Diner (@neptunedinernyc) is a few minutes walk on 31st St or continue walking north on 31st St to get into the commercial heart of Greek Astoria.

Evelyn’s Playground – December 7, 2019
UNION SQUARE. Few places capture the energy of NYC like Union Square (@unionsquareny). It is a transit hub, home to a popular greenmarket and Christmas Market, a popular place for political protests and other large gatherings and home to several impressive old statues. Most notably an equestrian statue of George Washington. In the north end of the park, hidden in between the concrete square that hosts the greenmarket and park’s small but well manicured green space, is this delightful little playground. Split into two sections based on age. For smaller kids there are baby swings, a little sand pit and an inviting jungle gym. The older section has a few slides including one built on a rock and some unique climbing equipment including a large metallic dome. Go ahead, try and resist the urge to impress your kids by making it to the top. Hint – get a good running start and wear shoes with a decent grip.
Coffee: There are two Starbucks and one Peet’s on the park. There are several smaller offerings a few blocks in almost any given direction but the closest is Bread’s Bakery (@breadsbakery), just a half block west on 16th. The pastries are delicious.
Food: Food options around Union Square are endless but anytime we are around here it is hard to resist the urge to eat at Old Town Bar (@oldtownbarnyc) on 18th between Park and Broadway. Not only is it one of the finest vintage bars in all of New York City but their buffalo wings are top notch and the hot dog is legendary. There are no high chairs but the booth seating usually contains our little guy.

Diana Ross Playground – November 19, 2019
CENTRAL PARK. Just inside Central Park on West 81st St this is a great stop before or after a trip to the nearby Natural History Museum (@amnh). The entire playground consists of an inviting wooden jungle gym set in a huge sandpit. The name comes from the playgrounds benefactor, singer Diana Ross.
Coffee Options: The NY Historical Society (@nyhistory) is on 77th st one block south of the museum and just inside the entrance is the sleek and modern Parliament Coffee.

Bryant Park – November 9, 2019
MIDTOWN. There is no playground in Bryant Park (@bryantparknyc) but there is a cute little French style carousel. During the holidays Bryant Park hosts a Christmas Market and an ice rink and lots of tourists. If it’s too cold go warm up in the New York Public Library (@nypubliclibrary113).
Coffee Options: Joe Coffee Company (@joecoffeecompany) has a permanent location inside the park just a stone’s throw from the carousel. In addition to coffee they make a great hot chocolate.
Food Options: If you’re here during the Christmas Market you’ll find a wide array of food stalls serving everything from crepes to raclette to tacos.

Playground at 9th & Penn – November 24, 2019
WASHINGTON DC. About a mile down Pennsylvania Ave from the Capital Building and just outside the Eastern Market Metro Station there is a little playground with just two pieces of equipment; a fairly standard jungle gym and a somewhat unique climbing sphere. As a sightseeing break it’s a great playground because it is both convenient and not difficult to pry your children away from to go back to the museums. And there is a great coffee shop right across the street.
Coffee Options: Across Pennsylvania Ave on 9th St. and located in a 19th century carriage house is the delightfully charming Little Pearl (@littlepearldc). It’s a coffee shop in the morning and Michelin starred restaurant at night. Take your coffee to go or sit down and enjoy it with a tasty pastry inside or out on the porch.

Chelsea Park Playground – November 16, 2019
CHELSEA. A quiet little playground in between 9th and 10th ave and 27th and 28th st with all the standard playground equipment. It’s part of the compact Chelsea Park which includes an enclosed soccer field, some ball courts and exercise equipment. It makes for a decent quick stop if you’re on your way to The High Line (@highlinenyc) or Hudson Yards (@hudsonyards).
Coffee Options: Citizens of Chelsea (#citizensofchelsea) on the corner of 9th Ave and 25th St.

Bleecker Street Playground. November 17, 2019
GREENWICH VILLAGE. A very charming playground at the intersection of Hudson and Bleecker. Spend the morning here and you’ll feel like a west village local. Some people claim this is a great place for celebrity spotting. We’ve never run into anyone famous but you will find a playground full of old toys (peddle cars and kitchen setups) that have been left by neighborhood kids. The small jungle gym in a big sandbox is almost as much fun as the toy cars. It’s understandable why this place is so crowded on nice weekends.
Coffee Options: Several very close options, one of which is Rebel Coffee on 8th ave and 12th st. Cute shop. Cool logo. Good coffee. Great donuts.
Food Options: A number of great options are very close. The White Horse Tavern is one of NYC’s oldest bars. While most people come here to drink they do make a good burger for lunch.

Madison Square Park. November 2, 2019
FLATIRON. Tucked in the northeastern corner of Madison Square Park is cute little playground with a nice jungle gym, a baby sized jungle gym and a few swings. The park itself is a delight to explore with a couple fountains, little green spaces and pigeons for chasing.
Coffee: The area between Madison Square Park and Herald Square is teeming with good coffee shops.
Food: A Shake Shack (@shakeshack) in the park is the obvious choice on a nice day but expect that it will be crowded. Eataly (@eatalyflatiron) is across the street but the areas with kid friendly seating are often the busiest. Walking down Broadway towards Union Square there are plenty of options. Beechers Handmade Cheese (@beechersny) is a good casual option with nice sandwiches and delicious macaroni and cheese.

Billy Johnson Playground. November 11, 2019
CENTRAL PARK. Recently renovated this awesome playground at 67th st and 5th ave utilizes a lot of wood, stone and rope. Highlights are the two stone slides that are carved on the side of a small hill. Even adults can’t resist letting out a little “weeee” on the way down. There is also a great wooden jungle gym with a cool and very safe rope bridge. This playground is a great option if your kids didn’t burn enough energy at the nearby Central Park Zoo.
Coffee options: Hole in the wall Bel Ami Cafe (@belamicafe) is just one block away on Madison and 68th st.

Socrates Sculpture Park. November 10, 2019
LONG ISLAND CITY/ASTORIA. A shopping cart hit by a meteor. A bathroom counter in the middle of a field. A red velvet robe wrapped in a tree. These are just a few of the oddball art pieces your little ones can explore at the free to enter Socrates Sculpture Park. Built over what once was an illegal dumping site, Socrates is a great place to kick off a morning exploring Astoria or a trip to Costco, which is in the lot next door.
Coffee option: Just across from the entrance is Chateau le Woof (@chateaulewoof). Split into two sections; one for patrons with two legs and one for those with four. Luckily there is a big window for the customers sipping coffee to watch ones chasing their tails. The latte art here is top notch!
Food: Just a few minutes walk up Broadway is the classic Bel Aire diner. Neptune Diner is a little further on 31st St or continue walking north on 31st St to get into the commercial heart of Greek Astoria. Make sure to stop in a grocery store or little specialty shop. Check out Titan grocery store for more kinds of feta cheese then you ever imagined. Old school butcher Plaza Meat Market makes the best sausages on earth. Period.

East 72nd Street Playground November 9, 2019
UPPER EAST SIDE. Central Park is full of playgrounds. This one is convenient to the Bethesda Fountain and The Mall. Billy Johnson Playground on 67th st and the Ancient Playground on 86th st are better known but 72nd’s is less crowded and the minimalist natural feel is aesthetically very pleasing. There is a stone climbing pyramid, lots of short concrete walls, two tire swings and neutral colors.
Coffee: Ralph’s is the fancy coffee shop inside the Ralph Lauren store on Madison and 72nd st. It fills an otherwise deep void of coffee shops near Central Park in this area. Place your order at the retro looking counter and enjoy your coffee in one of the plush sitting nooks.

Playground 123 in Morningside Park. October 6, 2019
UPPER WEST SIDE. Skinny Morningside park is just east of Columbia University, stretching from 110th to 123rd. Several playgrounds dot the park but the biggest is Playground 123 at the far north end. There are a number of good coffee shops east of the park in what feels like the last tourist free area of Manhattan. Exploring the campus of Columbia University and the massive Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine (@stjohndivinenyc) make this a fun day trip. We arrived here through the north end of central park on a Sunday. The gospel songs from the area’s numerous churches were audible on nearly every block.
Coffee Options. Just a couple blocks from the playground is the spacious and welcoming Plowshares Coffee Roasters (@plowsharescoffee) on 126th Street. If you’re taking the 2,3,C,B train to 116th then check out cozy Shuteye Coffee (@shuteyecoffee).
Food: Lots of great options. By Columbia you could go to Tom’s (@tomsrestaurant), of Seinfeld fame. Lolo’s Seafood Shack (@lolosseafoodshack) at 116th and Manhattan Ave. is a rustic bayou themed restaurant.

Columbus Playground. November 3, 2019
CHINATOWN. This little park separates Chinatown from the cluster of government buildings that surround federal circle. There is no particularly unique playground equipment but there are some cool design elements that give it a Far Eastern feel. Chinatown’s famous Doyers Street is just around the corner and the area is teaming with fun and inexpensive lunch options.
Coffee: Hole in the wall Oliver Coffee (@oliver_coffee_nyc) has a literal hole in the wall to place your order. F S Mocha at Silk road is a stone’s throw from the park. It’s a cute little Chinatown throwback that might tempt you to swap coffee for it’s plentiful selection of tea.
Food: Most of the restaurants in Chinatown are child friendly. If you’re not sure where to go follow the crowds. Health department ratings can help provide confidence to try something you may not otherwise go into. Some of our favorites are the massive (but sometimes severely crowded) Jing Fong (@jingfongny), Big Wong for the name only, Peking Duck for peking duck and Joe’s Ginger (#joesginger) for a classic chinatown experience with a zagat rating.

Bellevue South Park. November 2, 2019
KIPS BAY. Hidden between First and Second Ave on 27th this decently sized playground is a nice quiet oasis in an otherwise busy neighborhood. There are two separate play areas, the bigger one is ringed by three gigantic frogs. The walk from here to Madison Square park is less than 15 minutes and full of cool coffee shops, tons of restaurants and the occasion neighborhood throwback like La Delice bakery.
Coffee: Proof Coffee Roasters is just across the street from the park towards 1st ave.
Food: There is a heavy concentration of Indian restaurants on Lexington Ave around 27th as well as a host of other options.

Speeltuin Herenmarkt. April 17, 2019
JORDAAN, AMSTERDAM. The most adorable little playground in the most adorable little neighborhood in a city with a reputation for being grimy. The playground is a little fenced in blacktop next to a canal. There is a huge sandbox, a couple swings, a little jungle gym, a basketball hoop and it’s full of push/peddle cars the neighborhood kids have left for communal use. If you come to Amsterdam with kids go here! It is the perfect place to sip a latte and watch the city go by while both you and your kids pretend to be locals.
Coffee: Both of these are a few blocks northwest towards Westerpark. Toki has a totally chill vibe with a minimalist interior. If you’ve never tried a cafe tonic you can pick one up at Coffee & Such.
Food: A few blocks up Brouwersgracht on the other side of the canal is family friendly Cafe Thijssen. Their chicken nuggets are identical to McDonals. A little walk in any direction and you’ll find one of several Pancakes!, a must stop for those traveling with kids in Amsterdam.

John Jay Playground
UPPER EAST SIDE. Huge neighborhood playground at the far east end of 77th street next the beautiful old Cherokee Apartment building. The nearby French school is why you hear a lot of French accents. The playground can be quite busy but there is a large separate jungle gym for little ones. Highlights are a pair of ridable concrete camels and a cute little cityscape truck table…so make sure to bring your toys cars. In the summer there are two very nicely kept public pools.
Coffee options: Every good French school needs a decent nearby cafe. Le Moulin Cafe on York serves great pastries and sells French groceries. Oslo on 75th was one of the first trendy coffee shops in the area. A little further away Cafe Ines has good light brunch options.
Foods: Within a block you’ll find Hero Burger and Gotham Pizza, one of the best slices in NYC, IMHO. And 2nd Ave is teaming with great options.

Parlour Coffee. April 7, 2019
We stopped here before on our way to somewhere else in Brooklyn. We didn’t go to a nearby playground. But it’s worth a post because it is one of the coolest places to get coffee in NYC. Parlour is across the street from the Brooklyn Navy Yard and it is only open 10-2 on Sundays. The stark yet well designed tasting area is full of coffee bean bags that our toddler loved to climb on.

Msgr. McGolrick Park. June 2, 2019
GREENPOINT. Deep in the heart of Greenpoint, just off the BQE and in an area that shows off its Polish roots. The surrounding park is a decent sized green space where the middle courtyard hosts a farmers market. There are several fenced in areas that make up a cute playground buzzing with local families. McCarren Park is a short walk away but don’t leave Greenpoint until you try out some Polish cuisine.
Coffee. Variety Coffee Roasters (@varietycoffee) on the southwestern corner of the park.
Food: Lots of good options, Polish is the ethnic cuisine of the area and worth checking out. I don’t know how many medieval Polish themed restaurants there are but Krolewshie Jadlo feels like one of the best.

Tompkins Square Park. September 14, 2019
EAST VILLAGE. Tompkins Square Park is a little gritty but full of energy. It seems like every time we come here there is a parade or gathering of some kind that holds our little ones attention. There are two playgrounds (an old and and a new one) as well as a dog run, a few grassy spaces, lots of benches and walking paths, a farmers market and even ping pong tables. Our toddler loves the tall slide at the older playground along Avenue A. The newer playground at Avenue B and 7th street has two very nice age based jungle gyms. Pre lunch exploring is top notch as each surrounding neighborhood is a joy to stroll through. If you need some spices or you like interesting shops check out SOS Chefs (@soschefs) on Avenue B and 7th.
Coffee Options: All of these are directly across the street from the park. Three Seat Espresso on Avenue A between 8th and 9th. Tiny Ninth Street Espresso Avenue B and 10th. C&B Cafe on Avenue B and 7th.
Food: The bagels at Tompkins Square Bagels are good enough to justify the long lines. There are a lot of casual options along Avenue A but venture deeper into Alphabet City and you won’t be disappointed.

UPPER WEST SIDE. Take a walk through Riverside Park to the Hippo Playground just down the hill from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on 91st Street. Coffee options: Edgar on Amsterdam Ave and Birch on Columbus Ave.
Foods: Stroll back to Broadway and Amsterdam.

Sol Lain Playground. October 20, 2019
LOWER EAST SIDE. If you’re looking to explore an area of the lower east side you’ve never been this is a good bet. Nearest subways are F,M,J,Z. You could also take the ferry to Corlears Hook. After wandering under the Williamsburg bridge and down a few unfamiliar streets we found this little playground that is attached to a school. The views of the Freedom Tower walking down East Broadway were really nice. The playground equipment is very nicely kept and in addition to the standard items there were a few unique things like a drawbridge and log cabin. A few minutes walk puts you back in the heart of the LES.
Coffee: Nearby OST Cafe has a very rustic, farmhouse vibe.
Foods: Newly renovated Essex Market is a short walk away. From arancini to Thai fried chicken there is something for the whole family.

Domino Sugar Park. October 19, 2019; May 18, 2019
WILLIAMSBURG. Take the ferry to North or South Williamsburg and walk along the water to this imaginative playground in the shadow of the old Domino Sugar Factory. Inspired by the old factory the playground and accompanying little park feel industrial. Several huge old loading cranes line the entrance to the park. There are great riverside views, multi story climbing towers, long enclosed slides and even a little grassy area in the park. Hip Williamsburg is just minutes away is always a joy to explore.
Coffee options: Totally trendy and cool. Check out JANE, doubles as a motorcycle shop, and Devocion.
Food: Danny Meyer’s Tacocina is in the park or stroll back into Williamsburg for lots of options. We like kid friendly Radegast Beerhall for beer, pretzels and sausages.
